I’m still not sure how to feel about Islam. If you listen to the right wing in this country, they’re poised to take over the world with the help of President Obama and his Kenyan … something or other. Clearly I don’t believe that’s true, nor do I think American Muslims should be feared. On the other hand, thousands of their South Asian counterparts rioted when some Danish cartoonist drew a caricature of their prophet … as part of a segment on free speech. Many died. Even more died when the US Army accidentally burned one in an incinerator, even when they immediately apologized. I think I’m allowed to have a healthy concern about any religion that – in some parts of the world in the 21st century – demands deadly retribution for the seemingly smallest transgression. Obviously there are secular and moderate muslims who don’t buy into that kind of behavior anymore, but all you need to do is look at southern Asia and it’s still pretty rampant.
Anyway, here’s a little bit from Sam Harris on it … its about four minutes long. Sunday Morning Blasphemy tomorrow, and then normal posts resume on Monday.
