Another Esteemed Member of the House Science Committee

Todd Akin: No ‘Science’ Behind Evolution

… the GOP Senate candidate [of “legitimate rape” infamy] who’s running against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said Thursday at a Tea Party meeting in Jefferson City, Missouri, that there’s no science behind evolution:

AKIN: Well … I take a look at both sides of the thing, and … umm … It seems to me that evolution takes a tremendous amount of faith to all of a sudden have all of the different things that have to be lined up to create something as sophisticated as life.  It takes a lot of faith.  I don’t see it as even a matter of science because I don’t know that you can prove one or the other. That’s one of those things. We can talk about theology and all of those other things but I’m basically concerned about, you’ve got a choice between Claire McCaskill and myself. My job is to make the thing there. If we want to do theoretical stuff, we can do that, but I think I better stay on topic.

It’s a little too late to stay on topic.  What you happened to do in the span of one minute is say to the American people that you are too intellectually lazy to bother educating yourself on one of the basic foundations of modern science, thus allowing you to understand that the phenomenon if evolution is a confirmed fact that is constantly being verified and validated every day.  By saying it takes a “tremendous amount of faith” to believe it not only trivializes the sheer vastness of supporting scientific evidence, but wrongly elevates Christian mythology to the same level as a legitimate scientific field.

Sadly, there are enough people in this country insufficiently versed in basic science that many will take what you said as a “balanced” approach that manages to reconcile faith with reason and applaud you for it.

I, on the other hand, think that such statements should deem you unfit for holding a position on the House Science Committee, along with your buddy Paul Broun.  Hell, with people like you running the show, our entire country will be slingshot back into the 18th century so fast our powdered wigs and fainting couches will leave skid marks.
