Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) claimed on Tuesday that Presndent Obama and the White House is being intolerant of Christians serving in the military because of its opposition to an amendment in the National Defense Authorization Act, which among other things gives additional protections to religious proselytizing.
Their argument, and I’m inclined to agree, is that when you have a religion whose more vocal and “devout” members have a well-established reputation for slut-shaming, gay-bashing, and atheist-hating, the act of “proselytizing” can easily cross the line into harassment, hate speech, and discrimination.
Gohmert said the president’s opposition to the amendment amounted to discrimination against Christians during a press conference with the Family Research Council (FRC).
Ah. The Family “Research” Council. Home of Tony Perkins, who regularly tries to confuse homosexuality with pedophilia, claims same-sex parents harm children, and is afraid that ending DADT will result in an increase of the number of homosexual assaults against heterosexual servicemen. He also asked why there isn’t a “Drunkenness Pride Month”since we have Gay Pride Month, since they’re exactly the same, am I right?
This is the kind of company Gohmert keeps. At least now you know where his money is coming from, I guess.
“It seems like the only group that it is politically correct to be intolerant of are Christians, who have such a profound effect on the founding of this country, including about a third of the signers of the Declaration of Independence being ordained ministers,” Gohmert said, according to the Houston Chronicle.
I think people are intolerant of Christians only when they demonstrate an intolerance of people they don’t like and use the bible as an excuse for it. The problem is that many who pull this crap are in positions of power and use their authority to force their own Puritan-era interpretation of morality on the rest of us.
“If this administration is going to continue to tolerate this kind of intolerance, they are going to lose members of the military that cannot serve if their First Amendment rights aren’t going to be protected with regard to religion,” Gohmert continued.
They are protected. No one’s saying you can’t bow your head and worship God anymore. It’s just that you can’t treat other people like shit because you think that’s what your God wants … and if you do, you can’t hide behind “free speech” or “freedom of religion” to get away with it like you used to. Boy, that’s tough having to play by the same rules as everyone else.
Anyway, it’s just more of the same from a guy who sounds about ready for the Rapture. There are more like him … and they all help run the US government.
Just try to get to sleep tonight.
